Homestays are on fire again!

Unpopular tourist cities are also "crowded", and 70% of the listings have been booked for May Day

  The Paper reporter Tang Yingying

"There are indeed too many people during the Spring Festival this year, and the increase has increased several times. Like the Erhai Lake in Dali, there are traffic jams everywhere, and it is also 'difficult to find a room'."

With the continuous favorable policies in the tourism market and the continuous recovery of medium and long-term tourism, homestay booking also ushered in a "good start" in January this year.

B&B owners in several tourist destinations told The Paper (www.thepaper.cn) that during the Spring Festival of the Year of the Rabbit that just passed, the houses were basically full, and the prices of B&Bs also rose accordingly, exceeding the same period before the epidemic.

"Escape" from Lijiang to Dali, the unpopular city is also "crowded"

According to data from Tujia homestay, the overall homestay bookings before the Spring Festival holiday this year will be six times that of 2022, a record high since the epidemic.

From the perspective of destinations, homestay bookings in Dali, Chongqing, Chengdu, Xiamen, Lijiang, Shanghai, Sanya, Guangzhou, Xishuangbanna, Xi'an and other places during the Spring Festival holiday are hot.

Among them, the number of Spring Festival homestay bookings for Shanghai and Guangzhou people has even doubled compared with 2019, and the increase in Beijing and Chengdu has exceeded 50%.

Brother Hong, the owner of Dali Manshan B&B, told The Paper that during the entire Spring Festival, the occupancy rate of his B&B was 100%. From New Year’s Eve to the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, the occupancy rate was above 95%, close to 100%. The occupancy rate in January About 80%.

During the Spring Festival holiday, Hainan, Yunnan, Guangdong, Fujian and other regions with an average temperature of around 20 degrees Celsius are very popular.

"Escaped from Lijiang on the night of Chinese New Year's Eve, passed through Dali, and arrived in Mangshi after 6 and a half hours and more than 500 kilometers, but ended up in a crowded place again." A blogger shared on a social platform.

At the bottom of the blogger’s comment section, many tourists with similar experiences commented, “Mangshi was not originally a tourist city, but it was occupied by too many people who persuaded them to leave from Banna, Lijiang, and Dali. The sudden popularity , a little caught off guard."

"In addition to the end of the epidemic, there is another reason that a TV series was filmed here, and many people came to catch up with the trend, so there were many people in Dali and Lijiang during the Spring Festival." Brother Hong explained.

The average house price exceeds that before the epidemic

  Hainan is even more popular.

Jiang Zhao (pseudonym), the landlord of Haizhizhou International Holiday Apartment in Haitang Bay, Sanya, told The Paper that his homestay was "full as a whole" in January, and it was "the whole family celebrating the New Year".

The country house also ushered in a "good start" for the New Year.

Sister Lian, the owner of the Haijiaozhihua B&B in Wanning City, Hainan Province, told The Paper that the rooms are basically full during the Spring Festival this year, with an occupancy rate of over 90%.

"Until the twelfth day of the first lunar month, the number of guests gradually decreased, but it was full again by the Lantern Festival."

According to data from Fliggy and Xiaozhu B&Bs, the number of bookings for rural B&Bs in January increased by 132% year-on-year, far exceeding the same period in 2019.

According to the data of Xiaozhu Homestay, during the Spring Festival this year, the order volume of boutique country homestays on the platform increased by 260% year-on-year, and "post-90s" and "post-00s" became the main force of consumption, accounting for over 87%.

In terms of prices, due to the impact of holidays and the recovery of tourism during the Spring Festival this year, the prices of homestays have also risen, surpassing the same period before the epidemic, and even reaching a five-year high.

Brother Hong told The Paper that the housing prices in Dali during the Spring Festival this year are higher than those in previous years, whether it is the Spring Festival or the National Day.

"It can be said that it has reached a record high." Brother Hong said that many hotels in Dali, and many homestays that are not usually well-run, have also increased their prices several times.

Jiang Zhao also pointed out that the overall average house price of his homestay in January this year was the highest in the past five years, and it was 20% higher.

"Because there is no epidemic factor, this year is mainly due to the large number of reservations in advance." Jiang Zhao pointed out, "80% of the reservations have been made in advance this year, unlike the temporary orders that have been more than three years since the epidemic, and more reservations were made that week."

"Pre-sales are very important to the accommodation industry, and housing price gains can be arranged in advance." Jiang Zhao explained: "Because pre-sales are better, the average house price this year has exceeded that before the epidemic."

"May Day already has an order"

At the same time, due to the absence of the impact of the epidemic, many homestay owners told The Paper that there are very few cancellations of orders for the Spring Festival this year.

"The rooms for the Spring Festival in previous years were almost fully booked half a month or a month in advance, but they were all sold out because of the fear of the epidemic or the impact of the policy. For example, the Spring Festival in 2022, the occupancy rate is only about 20% % to 30%, which is lighter than usual.” Hong Ge said that this past Spring Festival, tourism in Dali was booming, and the number of tourists increased by about three or four times.

According to data from the Yunnan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, Yunnan Province received a total of 45.1461 million tourists during the Spring Festival holiday, a year-on-year increase of 244.7%, and realized tourism revenue of 38.435 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 249.4%, recovering to 130.3% and 132.5% of 2019 respectively. Following the record high in a single month of summer vacation last year, it has set a new record in holiday tourism history.

"The resurgence of tourism in big cities, the overflow of surrounding cities, and the explosion of unpopular small cities. The Spring Festival in 2023 will give a good start to the recovery of the entire tourism industry and give confidence to the entire industry." Hu Yang, vice president of Tujia Homestay, said.

In fact, not only the Spring Festival and the whole of January, the recovery of the tourism industry continued after the Lantern Festival.

Sister Lian told The Paper that although the peaks of the Spring Festival and Lantern Festival have passed, the weekends in February are almost fully booked.

Judging from the current booking situation, the next small peak of homestay booking may be the May Day holiday.

Jiang Zhao told The Paper: "There is no order for Qingming, but there is already an order for May Day."

Brother Hong also told The Paper: "Judging from the current booking situation, including April 28th, 29th, and May 1st, some houses are now 70% booked."
