Iran has decided to pardon or commute the prison sentences of a large number of convicts, in particular those arrested since September during opposition demonstrations against power.

These clemency measures did not prevent the arrest of a new journalist from the reformist daily Ham Mihan.

According to the official media, these pardon measures concern several tens of thousands of people among those who have been sentenced to prison terms or those who have been arrested and not yet tried.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has agreed to these amnesties ahead of the 44th anniversary of the victory of

the Islamic Revolution

which will be celebrated on Saturday 11 February.

Thus, those arrested for having written anti-government slogans on the walls or having had activities on social networks hostile to the Republic will be released immediately and their case will be closed.

Reductions in prison terms are also provided for convicts.

A gesture from the authorities

Thousands of people have been arrested for their participation in the protest movement after

the death of Mahsa Amini

on September 16, 2022. She had been arrested for

not respecting the compulsory Islamic veil

.

According to the published text, those released must give a written commitment

Similarly, all persons accused or convicted of links with foreign intelligence services or of having attacked or killed members of the security forces, set fire to public buildings or are members of groups hostile to the Islamic Republic are excluded from these measures of grace.

It is undeniably a gesture on the part of the authorities to appease the spirits on the eve of the anniversary of the victory of the Islamic revolution on February 11 and the Iranian new year, at the end of March.
