Iran: filmmaker Jafar Panahi released on bail after seven months in prison

Iranian award-winning director Jafar Panahi was arrested last July and was imprisoned in Tehran.

His release was announced by the NGO Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI, based in New York).

Jafar Panahi was released after he

had just started a hunger strike

He was incarcerated in Evin prison, in Tehran.

This Friday, the Iranian newspaper Sargh published a photo showing the multi-award-winning director hugging one of his supporters on his release from prison.

Jafar Pahani, 62, was arrested on July 11, even before the start of the wave of protest actions that has shaken the Iranian regime since September, and was 

forced to serve a six-year prison sentence.

 pronounced in 2010 for “propaganda against the system”.

On October 15, the Supreme Court overturned the conviction and ordered a new trial, giving his lawyers hope for release.
