• Botín, Galán, Ortega, Roig... the accusations from the Government that have blown up businessmen

The second vice president of the Government,

Yolanda Díaz

, has attacked the banks on her social networks this Wednesday after learning about BBVA's record results in 2022. She has indicated that

the crisis cannot be an excuse for banks to earn more

and has demanded that they

freeze mortgages and moderate their benefits.

"While the rise in the Euribor will make the average mortgage more expensive by 250 euros per month,

BBVA's profits grow 38% to reach 6,420 million

, the highest in its history," Díaz summarized in a tweet collected by Efe, before adding that the crisis cannot be an excuse to earn more and ask for mortgages to be frozen and benefits to be moderated.

The vice president charges again against the banking sector and her direct criticism of BBVA adds to those expressed in recent weeks by different members against

other companies in the country

, such as

Mercadona

, the target of criticism from Minister Ione Belarra.

The diversification of BBVA, which has its main source of income in Mexico, largely explains this advance in results.

In Spain, the bank earned 1,678 million, 8.4% more

, thanks to increased activity and increased revenue.

Precisely these incomes will be used to determine the rate that the entity will have to pay this year and next after the approval by the Government of an extraordinary tax that remains to be seen if the sector will appeal in court.

BBVA is one of the entities that signed the new

Code of Good Practices in Spain

to help families with the most difficulties in paying their mortgages, although its social contribution began from the bank's own activity, which channeled more than 9,000 million euros in loans to entrepreneurs, sustainable infrastructures, social bonds or mortgages and social security.
