Gaza Strip: For Hamas, Israeli attacks cannot remain without consequences

Sirens sounded overnight in Israel, following rocket fire from the Gaza Strip.

The Jewish state retaliated, carrying out strikes against the Palestinian enclave.

No casualties are reported on either side.

But this violence comes the day after a deadly raid launched by the Israeli occupation forces in the occupied West Bank, in Jenin.

Nine Palestinians were killed yesterday by the Israeli army in this town.

A tenth was killed near Ramallah.

The firing from the Gaza Strip is a response to the Israeli assault on Jenin.

Hamas, the Palestinian armed group in power in the Gaza Strip, has not officially claimed responsibility for the shootings that night.

But its message is clear: the Israeli attacks will not remain without consequences.

Caution

Regularly, following Israeli military operations in the occupied West Bank, or an incursion by the Jewish State police on the esplanade of the Mosques in Jerusalem, the Palestinian Islamist movement fires salvoes of rockets against Israeli cities.

Like this night, they are generally intercepted by the "Iron Dome", the Israeli anti-missile device.

But this is more of a warning from Hamas than a real declaration of war.

Not an isolated event

However, the violence of the past 24 hours is not an isolated event.

Over the past twelve months, Israel has stepped up its incursions into the areas of Jenin and Nablus, strongholds of Palestinian armed groups in the West Bank.

The year 2022 has been the deadliest time in Palestine for almost twenty years.

And there are already thirty deaths since the beginning of 2023.
