A draft policy compiled by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has been revealed regarding the use of thermal power generation to achieve both the realization of a decarbonized society and the stable supply of electricity.

Towards 2050, we are taking measures to decarbonize, such as mixing hydrogen and ammonia, which do not emit carbon dioxide, with other fuels and burning them at power plants.

The government has set a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to virtually zero by 2050, and how to proceed with decarbonization while utilizing thermal power generation, which currently accounts for 70% of domestic power generation. is the issue.

Against this backdrop, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has unveiled a draft policy on the utilization of thermal power generation.

The plan states that it is necessary to steadily promote decarbonization while reducing the share of thermal power generation as much as possible.

On top of that, in the future, we will promote decarbonization measures, such as burning hydrogen and ammonia, which do not emit carbon dioxide, mixed with other fuels at newly constructed power plants.

Furthermore, with regard to existing thermal power plants, we will ask business operators to make a clear decision on whether to refurbish facilities for decarbonization or to abolish them in the future.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) wants to promote these efforts and achieve both the realization of a decarbonized society and the stable supply of electricity, and plans to consider the necessary systems.
