Despite a slowdown observed in December, the number of companies created in France reached a new record in 2022. Insee (National Institute of Statistics) has a total of 1.072 million registrations.

Of the businesses created in the past year, 61% were created by self-employed people.

In 2021, 1.05 million companies had been created, according to the new INSEE calculation method, which had initially reported just under 996,000 creations.

The number of micro-enterprises created by self-entrepreneurs increased by 2.8% to more than 656,000 last year and the creation of companies increased even more strongly, with an increase of 4.8% to nearly 300,000 compared to 2021. On the other hand, the creation of traditional sole proprietorships fell by 7.4% to 122,000.

Decline in December

One sector contradicts the general trend towards an increase in the number of business creations, that of transport and warehousing with 34.5% less registrations.

These activities, which include home deliveries, had experienced very strong growth during the Covid-19 crisis, but many companies did not survive the lifting of health restrictions.

In December, business creations fell by 3.4% over one month in data adjusted for seasonal variations and the number of working days, with in particular a decline of 10% in household services and in manufacturing industry ( -16.3%).

However, business creations were up sharply over one year, by 8.5%, in the fourth quarter of 2022, with an 11.2% increase in registrations of micro-enterprises (auto-entrepreneurs).
