A specialist in media economics, Philippe Bailly reveals what the four billion euros allocated to French television channels and radio stations represent: “until the abolition of the license fee, the French paid 30 to 40 centimes per day to benefit from all the channels of France Télévisions, all the antennas of Radio France, France 24, RFI and other public services.

Advertising represents only 10% of France Télévisions revenue

In France, the audiovisual license fee has been abolished but with our European neighbors, its equivalent is much higher: "the French paid 138 euros per year when in Germany or England, we are today rather on orders of magnitude which will be close to double… or even more”, specifies Philippe Bailly.

But in the absence of royalties, advertising does not generate enough to cover all the financing of television and radio.

“It only represents around 10% in the accounts of France Télévisions, so it is not the main driver of its revenue”.

OUR “AUDIOVISUAL PUBLIC” FILE

"For five years, so well before the economic crisis even started, the finances of the public service have been put on dry bread, the budget allocated to it has decreased by 5% during this period, without compensation for the 'inflation.

So these four billion grants are a real effort made at the level of the public service and the way in which the State provides it with the means, ”he continues.
