China News Agency, Beijing, January 12 (Reporter Chen Su) Zhu Chengqing, vice minister of China's Ministry of Water Resources, said in Beijing on the 12th that the area of water and soil erosion in China in 2021 will be reduced by 274,900 square kilometers compared with ten years ago.

Soil and water conservation status is an important comprehensive index reflecting the quality of ecological environment.

On the same day, the State Council Information Office held a press conference to introduce the situation of China's soil and water conservation.

Zhu Chengqing said that in recent years, China's soil and water conservation work has achieved remarkable results, and the area and intensity of soil erosion have continued to show a "double decline" trend.

According to the latest monitoring by the Ministry of Water Resources, the national water and soil erosion area will be 2,674,200 square kilometers in 2021, a decrease of 274,900 square kilometers compared with ten years ago, and the proportion of areas with severe and above grades will drop from 33.8% to 18.93%.

Soil erosion control has effectively improved agricultural production conditions and rural living environment, and promoted local economic and social development.

Recently, the Chinese government issued the "Opinions on Strengthening Water and Soil Conservation in the New Era" (referred to as "Opinions") to provide guidance for China to strengthen water and soil conservation in the coming period.

The "Opinions" propose that by 2025, China's soil and water conservation system, mechanism and work system will be more complete, management efficiency will be further improved, man-made soil and water loss will be effectively controlled, water and soil loss in key areas will be effectively controlled, and the national water and soil conservation rate will reach 73%.

By 2035, a systematic, coordinated and efficient soil and water conservation system and mechanism will be fully formed, man-made soil and water loss will be fully controlled, water and soil loss in key areas will be fully controlled, and the national water and soil conservation rate will reach 75%.

"The soil and water conservation rate refers to the ratio of the non-water and soil erosion area to the national land area." Wu Wenqing, chief planner of the Ministry of Water Resources of China, said that by the end of 2021, the national soil and water conservation rate will be 72%.

Of the 2,674,200 square kilometers of soil erosion area, 1,229,200 square kilometers are mainly distributed in deserts, Gobi hinterlands, and alpine and high-altitude areas. These are not suitable for or do not need to be treated. Among the areas that need to be treated, comprehensive consideration Due to factors such as water and soil erosion laws, natural and geographical conditions, and technical and economic factors, only more than 520,000 square kilometers are expected to be completely "killed", and the rest can only be reduced in intensity.

"The remaining area of water and soil erosion is a 'hard nut to crack', and it is becoming more and more difficult to improve the water and soil conservation rate."

In order to achieve the goal of the "Opinions", Wu Wenqing said that the next step will be to focus on soil and water loss in forest and grassland as the focus of "reduction", increase the vegetation coverage of forest and grassland, improve the water and soil conservation function of the forest and grass ecosystem, and take slope farmland and eroded gullies as "reduction" We will vigorously promote the control of soil and water loss in sloping farmland, the construction of check dams on the Loess Plateau, and the control of erosion ditches in black soil in Northeast China.

At the same time, further innovate the supervision method, strictly control the newly added man-made soil erosion, increase the prevention and control of water and soil erosion during the concentrated disturbance period of the projects under construction, and promote the whole society to take the road of green, low-carbon and circular development.
