This new death sentence brings to 18 the number of people sentenced to death in connection with the protest, according to a count established by AFP.

On Monday, January 9, Iranian justice also sentenced to death three anti-government protesters, Saleh Mirhashemi, Majid Kazemi and Saeid Yaghoubi, accused of having killed Bassidjis, members of Iranian paramilitary forces on the sidelines of demonstrations in Isfahan.

The regime has also begun to carry out its sentences.

Mohammad Mehdi Karami and Seyed Mohammad Hosseini, two men in their twenties, were hanged on January 7th.

The two men were accused of having killed this member of the Bassidji militia, linked to the Revolutionary Guards, the ideological army of Iran, on November 3 in Karaj, west of Tehran.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights castigated, on January 10, 2023, political repression in Iran, and in particular the use of the death penalty.

The weaponization of criminal proceedings to punish those who exercise their basic rights, such as those who participate in or organize the protests, borders on state murder

,” Volker Türk said in a statement.

According to him, the regime uses capital punishment sentences against demonstrators to scare the population and silence protest.

The Iranian government would better serve its interests and those of its people by listening to their grievances and undertaking the necessary legal and policy reforms to ensure respect for diversity of opinion, the rights to freedom of expression and assembly, and the full respect and protection of women's rights in all spheres of life

", the High Commissioner insisted.
