Last year, the average annual number of employed people increased by the most in 22 years.

According to the 'December 2022 and Annual Employment Trends' announced by the National Statistical Office, the number of employed last year was 28,089,000, an increase of 816,000 from last year.

The average number of employed people decreased by 218,000 in 2020 when Corona 19 began, but increased again by 369,000 the following year, and recorded a high increase last year as well.

By industry, health and social welfare (180,000 people), manufacturing (135,000 people), and accommodations and restaurants (84,000 people) increased.

On the other hand, as online and non-face-to-face sales increased, the number of employed decreased from the previous year in wholesale and retail (-41,000 people) and finance and insurance (-26,000 people).

The employment rate for those aged 15 and over was 62.1%, up 1.6 percentage points from the previous year, the highest since statistics were compiled in 1963.

Last year, the number of unemployed was 833,000, down 205,000 from the previous year.

In December of last year alone, the number of employed people was 27.8 million, an increase of 509,000 from a year ago.

However, the rate of increase has slowed for seven months in a row.

Gong Mi-suk, head of the Social Statistics Bureau at the National Statistical Office, said, "Last year, there was a clear increase in the number of employed people due to increased activities following the recovery of daily life."
