The two young men hanged this Saturday morning are called Mohammad Mehdi Karami and Mohammad Hosseini.

They were tried with fourteen other people for the murder of an Islamist militiaman in early November during demonstrations against power.

There was a strong international mobilization in particular to support Mehdi Karami presented by his parents as a karate champion.

Videos

Videos taken by demonstrators were shown during the trial showing around 30 people attacking the Islamist militiaman Rouhollah Ajamian with stones or knives.

The court had sentenced five people to death in this case but the Supreme Court quashed the sentences of three other people.

In recent days, the official media have announced that the death sentences of around fifteen people arrested in recent months have been confirmed by the Supreme Court.

Journalists arrested

Two first executions took place already at the beginning of December.

Mohsen Shekari was hanged on December 8 for attacking an Islamist militiaman with a knife.

Another youth, Majidreza Rahnavard, was hanged in public on 12 December.

He had been found guilty by the Iranian courts of having killed two Islamist militiamen in the city of Mashhad.

Authorities have also announced new arrests in recent days, including four journalists.
