The mail-order giant Amazon is laying off 18,000 employees, almost 6 percent of its administrative employees.

The US group justifies this with the weak economy and high inflation.

The exchange is pleased with the cost savings.

But the truth is that Amazon has overdone it with new hires in recent years.

When the pandemic boosted business between the end of 2019 and the end of 2021, Amazon hired more than 800,000 people and entered new business areas.

Now the company has to be careful not to correct too much in the other direction.

Because as soon as the economy normalizes again, Amazon will need new employees again.

Amazon is likely to remain extremely popular as an employer.

But some will remember the layoffs.

After all, many victims of the wave of layoffs in the American tech industry are currently finding a new job quickly or founding a start-up themselves.

Who knows: Maybe a future Amazon competitor will be there.
