In 2022, German consumer prices rose more than they had in decades due to expensive energy and food.

They increased by an average of 7.9 percent, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Tuesday.

In 2021 the increase was still 3.1 percent.

Most experts predict a slight relaxation for the current year.

The Institute for the World Economy (IfW), for example, expects a decline to 5.4 percent.

In December, consumer prices rose by an average of 8.6 percent compared to the same month last year, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Tuesday.

In November, the inflation rate was 10.0 percent, having climbed to its highest level since 1951 at 10.4 percent in October
