South Korea's electric vehicle exports are taking a hit due to the electric vehicle subsidy discrimination law implemented in the United States, and a plan to cut subsidies for imported electric vehicles such as Tesla is being considered in Korea.

More details are reported by Jang Se-man, an environmental reporter.

<Reporter> When

you buy an electric car, you receive up to 7 million won in government subsidies plus additional subsidies by local governments.

However, from the new year, the government is considering introducing a new standard for subsidy payment, such as how much domestic service center infrastructure is equipped.

The Ministry of Environment said, “Considering the successive fires of electric vehicles, it is important to ensure safety by establishing a rapid maintenance system.”

Right now, Tesla, which is expected to receive a subsidy of nearly 100 billion won this year, is expected to be hit the hardest.

Although the cumulative sales volume exceeds 40,000 units, Tesla has only about 10 service centers in Korea.

It is far below domestic manufacturers or other imported car brands.

[Lee Ho-geun/Professor of Future Automotive Department, Daeduk University: Chinese electric car makers, which have no choice but to enter the domestic market next year, are not making efforts to build a service network.

So (Tesla, Chinese companies) will not be affected (I'm looking at it.)]

Another subsidy standard is also being reviewed.

It is paid according to whether electricity can be supplied externally from an electric vehicle or whether more than 100 rapid chargers are installed, and Hyundai-Kia Motors is the only one that meets both of these requirements.

After the United States gave preferential treatment to domestic electric vehicles through the IRA bill, even Europe showed similar movements, and we also have to confront it, but there are counterarguments.

[Kwon Yong-joo/Adjunct Professor of Automotive Transportation Design at Kookmin University: Including the number of service centers in subsidy payment conditions is an unprecedented provision in the world, so it seems to be somewhat controversial in the future.]

The Ministry of Environment is eco-friendly early next month We plan to finalize the car subsidy reorganization plan.
