Through the operation, the travel time from Chengdu to Xichang, Panzhihua, and Kunming will be greatly shortened, and the fastest travel time can be reached in 3 hours, 5 hours, and 7.5 hours respectively.

  According to the person in charge of the relevant department of China National Railway Group, the existing Chengdu-Kunming Railway has a total length of 1,096 kilometers and is a national Class I single-track railway with a design speed of 80 kilometers per hour. The geology along the line is complex, and it is called a "geological museum".

The completion of the Chengdu-Kunming Railway is known as one of the "three miracles symbolizing the conquest of nature by mankind in the 20th century".

Since the completion of the Chengdu-Kunming Railway, it has effectively played the role of a strategic channel and provided a strong transportation guarantee for economic and social development.

At the same time, with the continuous increase of transportation demand, the capacity of Chengdu-Kunming Railway is becoming saturated.

For this reason, the railway department decided to build a new Chengdu-Kunming Railway in the area along the existing Chengdu-Kunming Railway.

  The new Chengdu-Kunming Railway starts from Chengdu South Station and ends at Kunming Station. It is a national Class I double-track electrified railway with a design speed of 160 kilometers per hour. The geology along the line is complex and construction is extremely difficult.

Since the start of the project construction, the National Railway Group has adopted a segmented construction and segmented operation mode based on the difficulty of the project and the needs of transportation capacity, and has used a large number of long tunnels and high-pier long-span bridges to "cut bends and straighten" the line. Effectively resolve a variety of geological risks, overcome global construction difficulties, and build 7 long tunnels over 10 kilometers long, including the 22-kilometer Xiaoxiangling Tunnel, and 11 long-span bridges over 2 kilometers long.

At present, the new Chengdu-Kunming Railway from Chengdu South to Emei, Mianning to Miyidong, Miyidong to Panzhihua South, Panzhihua South to Yongren, Yongren to Guangtong North, and Guangtong North to Kunming have been completed in 2017. Completed and operated in December, January 2022, May 2020, January 2020, October 2019, and December 2013.

  The Emei-Mianning section, which was put into operation this time, started construction in April 2016, with a total length of 240 kilometers.

Before the opening of operation, China National Railway Group carefully organized the inspection and acceptance and safety assessment of various professional equipment on the Emei-Mianning section of the new Chengdu-Kunming Railway in strict accordance with various regulations and standards.

At present, this section fully meets the requirements for the safe and stable operation of passenger and freight trains and is ready for operation.

  The new Chengdu-Kunming railway is a key construction project of the country's western development. It connects the Chengdu railway hub in the north and the Kunming railway hub in the south. It is an important part of the railway channel from Southwest China to ASEAN countries.

Its full-line connection has further improved the road network structure in Southwest China and increased the railway transportation capacity. It will greatly facilitate the travel and cargo transportation of people along the line, and drive the development of resources along the line.
