News summary on the way home from work, Subsletter Evening.

Statistics on where Korean employed people work and how much they earn have been published.

A survey found that the number of salaried workers who received a raise has slightly increased, but 25% of them say that their monthly salary is less than 2 million won.

Another occupation in which the number of employees is increasing significantly is delivery man.

It surpassed 450,000 in the first half of this year, and it is said that each survey breaks the record for the most.

"25% of salaried workers are less than 2 million won"

Statistics Korea released the data titled 'Employment Survey by Region in the First Half of 2022 - Characteristics of Employers by Industry and Occupation'.

This data also includes survey data on the salary levels of wage earners and salaried workers as of April of this year.

There are a total of 21.5 million wage earners, of which 9.4%, or about 2.02 million, are paid less than 1 million won.

There were 3,426,000 (15.9%) wage workers whose monthly salary was less than 1 million to 2 million won, and 1 in 4 wage workers (25.3%) said that their monthly salary was less than 2 million won.

Those with a monthly salary of less than 2 million to 3 million won accounted for the largest share at 35.1%, and those with a monthly salary of 4 million won or more exceeded 20%.

Compared to a year ago, the proportions of less than 2 to 3 million won, 3 to 4 million won, and 4 million won or more increased by 1.8%p, 1.7%p, and 1.0%p, respectively.

In addition, the proportion of those employed with an average monthly wage of 2 million won or more increased by 4.4 percentage points from the first half of last year.

Salary rises due to increase in the minimum wage

Numerically, it is understood that the salary situation has improved overall. An official from the National Statistical Office said, "The proportion of workers earning less than 2 million won among all workers is the lowest level since 2013 statistics were compiled. Of the total workers, regular workers with good wages accounted for the largest share, accounting for 55%.”

By industry, among workers with a monthly salary of less than 1 million won, the highest proportion was in the accommodation and restaurant industry (27.0%), and among workers with a monthly salary of 4 million won or more, there were many workers in the professional, science and technology service industry (42.9%).

There is also an international comparison of Korea's major labor indices by the FKI, and there is also an item comparing the average annual wage up to last year (2021).

Here, the average annual wage of workers rose from $29,505 in 2000 to $42,747 in 2021, and the ranking rose from 24th to 20th among 37 OECD countries.

The FKI analyzes that the average annual wage also rose as the minimum wage increased.

The situation in the wage earner's wallet has improved a bit, but what about the rise in prices?

A more accurate analysis is needed, but it seems difficult to say that the figures that have been released now have improved.

Corona aftermath continues

Let's go back to the Statistics Korea survey and look at the employment analysis.

In the first half of this year (as of April), there were 28,078,000 people employed in the restaurant industry, accounting for the largest share of the total with 1568,000 people (5.6%) in terms of industry subcategories (232).

However, this number is a decrease of 46,000 (-2.8%) from a year ago.

The slump in face-to-face service employment continues.

For the same reason, insurance and pension-related service businesses (-38,000 people/-31.0%) and banks and savings institutions (-22,000 people/-8.7%) were also found to have provided employment.

On the other hand, the number of people employed in the non-resident welfare facility operation industry increased by 133,000 (10.7%), and the number of employed in the software development and supply industry also increased by 36,000 (10.3%).

The National Statistical Office explained that "as the demand for care services has steadily increased due to the aging population, the number of people employed in welfare facilities has increased significantly."

Every time the number of delivery people is surveyed, 'the highest number ever'

According to Statistics Korea data, there are statistics that look at the number of employed people by dividing them into 153 occupations.

But the job that stands out is the delivery man.

In the first half of the year, the number of delivery workers was 450,000, an increase of 6.2% from a year ago.

This is the highest number since 2013, when we started compiling these statistics.

Deliveryman is a job classification that encompasses postal, courier, and food delivery workers, which is an increase of over 100,000 compared to 343,000 in the first half of 2019, before the corona virus.

Let's look at the rankings.

After being ranked 20th in 2019, 17th in 2020, and 16th in 2021, it is steadily rising to 14th this year.

In terms of gender, males accounted for the majority with 410,000 out of 450,000.

If you look at the number of 450,000 students in the first half of this year, it is more than school teachers (422,000, 17th).

The National Statistical Office analyzed, "Amid the rapid increase in online shopping, the number of non-face-to-face orders increased due to the corona virus, and the increase was mainly driven by couriers and food delivery workers."

Delivery food and online shopping have become commonplace, and this trend will not stop, so it can be seen that the share of 'delivery' in the job market is increasing.
