The Frankfurt Bankhaus Metzler initiates a generational change in its management.

On Monday, the supervisory board appointed 60-year-old Gerhard Wiesheu as spokesman for the board of directors with effect from July 1, 2023 - a position that had previously only existed unofficially at Metzler.

Further decisions will be taken as early as January 1, 2023: Franz von Metzler, son of the head of the family Friedrich von Metzler, will then move up to the board of the family-owned bank founded in 1674 and will be the future spokesman or even chairman of the board for the time after Wiesheu.

Since the departure of Friedrich von Metzler in 2018, Emmerich Müller has led the bank as a so-called primus inter pares.

On the supervisory board, former DZ Bank boss Wolfgang Kirsch will take over as chairman of the supervisory board from Christoph Schücking.

This newspaper had already reported on the personal details of Wiesheu and Franz von Metzler as well as Kirsch a week ago and at the beginning of August.

In addition, Bankhaus Metzler announced on Monday the appointment of 47-year-old Stefanie Buchmann to the Board of Management for Compliance (rule compliance), law and human resources, also effective January 1, 2023.

Buchmann joined Metzler in 2004 from Deutsche Bank, where she was responsible for private equity in wealth management, and was appointed general manager in 2022.

With her and Franz von Metzler, the Executive Board will consist of seven people for a short time.

After leaving the Executive Board in summer 2023, Emmerich Müller is to switch to the Supervisory Board.

The previous chairman of the supervisory board, Schücking, is still a member of the supervisory body as deputy chairman of the supervisory board.

The change from Müller to Wiesheu and the two arrivals Franz von Metzler and Stefanie Buchmann lead to changed responsibilities on the board.

As expected, Japan expert Wiesheu, previously a kind of foreign minister for the bank, will take over responsibility for upscale private customer business from Müller.

The press release says nothing about Franz von Metzler's duties.

Since he has been working in asset management under Wiesheu so far, it is obvious that Franz von Metzler will gradually take on more responsibility here.
