The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure announced a partnership with the Australian-based GHD and the German-based research center Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, with the aim of developing the national strategy aimed at enabling the country to achieve leadership in the field of clean, low-carbon hydrogen technologies, and supporting its goals in climate neutrality. And the positive impact on the issue of climate change, and the strengthening of its efforts to reduce greenhouse emissions to reach climate neutrality by 2050, and the transition to clean energy.

The Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Suhail Al Mazrouei, said, “We are still focused on our goal to acquire 25% of the share of the most important hydrogen markets, and we aspire for the UAE to have a global authority that enables it to determine the role that hydrogen will play in the transformation of the energy sector.”

Al Mazrouei added that “GHD’s cooperation with the Ministry began with the evaluation of the important elements necessary to develop the hydrogen strategy in the UAE, and the scope of work of the GHD Company and the Research Institute (Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft) regarding the development and implementation of the national hydrogen strategy and setting the direction has been determined. The hydrogen economy will run at the state level.

He continued: "Hydrogen is an important source in the fields of energy, and plays an active role in efforts to transition to clean, low-carbon energy, given the expansion of reliance on it as an energy source, and the growth in the volume of hydrogen demand, and in support of the goals of the UAE leadership in hydrogen production and the use of technologies. With regard to this field, it has become necessary to develop the national strategy for hydrogen in line with the changes, and to ensure the competitiveness of the state in this sector at the international level.”

For his part, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure for the Energy and Petroleum Sector, Engineer Sherif Al-Olama, said that “with the acceleration of the global hydrogen economy thanks to technological innovation, partnerships and investment commitments, this element may turn into a solution to reach climate neutrality, and provide multiple market opportunities at the level of the electricity sectors.” Transport and the industrial sector.

"From this standpoint, the country realizes the importance of achieving the important elements of building a prosperous hydrogen-based economy, including appropriate infrastructure, technological readiness, and market access," the scientists added.

In turn, the Regional Director of GHD in the UAE, Bassam Halabi, said: “Our company looks forward to collaborating with the UAE government to develop its national hydrogen strategy in partnership with the (Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft) Institute, and we are committed to leading our customers, partners and communities and supporting them in their transition to the future. providing low-cost, reliable, safe and low-carbon energy.”

He added, "The current cooperation offers a unique opportunity to further strengthen the bilateral relations between the UAE and Germany by contributing to achieving the country's ambition to achieve zero emissions."

ambitious goals

The spokesperson for the Fraunhofer Research Institute Network for Hydrogen and the Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ESE), Professor Christopher Hebling, expressed his hope that the Fraunhofer Research Institute would contribute to achieving the ambitious goals adopted by the UAE in the field of climate neutrality by 2050 by helping to develop the National Hydrogen Strategy.
