Renfe has changed the reservation system for free Media Distancia subscriptions, which were launched on September 1, upon detecting bad practices on the part of some users, who formalized several seat reservations and, however,

in the end they did not travel

, thus blocking the seats and preventing "people who do need to travel, from being able to do so," Renfe sources explain.

With the Cercanías it is not necessary to formalize a prior seat reservation, but it is necessary with the medium-distance ones, which is where these irregularities have been found.

Many users complained because they could not formalize their seat and Renfe realized that

"finally there were not as many passengers on the trains as there were seat reservations".

To avoid this bad practice by some users, from now on only

four reservations can be made per day

(two outbound and two return) and, in addition, the traveler will not be able to book the return ticket until the one-way trip

Four reservations are maintained (and not two) so as not to harm travelers who have a split day, for example.

This measure "aims to reward recurring travelers and encourage the use of Renfe public transport", since "the misuse of free tickets causes harm to other citizens by limiting their mobility", they say.

In medium-distance tickets,

the user has to pay a deposit of 20 euros,

which will be returned in December if they prove they have made more than 16 trips.

Some users block places "in case they don't reach those 16 trips, others then decide not to travel... In the end, what they do is prevent people who need to travel to work from being able to do so, which is what they were created for." fertilizers," they point out.

The problem has been detected only in the medium-distance season tickets, since in those of Cercanías it is not necessary to formalize the space in advance and in those of Avant and some AVE routes the user does have to pay 50% of the season ticket, which assumes that, if they do not travel, they lose the money.

In the case of

conventional

medium-distance routes ,

the free pass is requested

for use on each route (it cannot be used for several) and is applied to the Barcelona Sans-Girona-Cerbere, Coruña-Santiago-Vigo, Seville corridors -Cádiz, Seville-Córdoba-Jaén, Valencia-Vinaroz-Tortosa, Valencia-Alicante-Murcia, Madrid-Valladolid-Vitoria, Salamanca-Madrid and Madrid-Jaén.

"Renfe has been monitoring the evolution of the use of season tickets from the first day and, given the occasional detection that may occur of misuse, the company is analyzing the measures to be adopted to avoid harming the rest of the citizens," says the business.
