The president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, announced this Monday that the Government will approve the creation and statutes for a public energy company on October 4

He explained it in statements to journalists at Climate Week NYC in New York (United States) together with the Minister for Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda, Teresa Jordà, the Government explained in a statement.

The new company will be based on renewable energies and

"will serve to make use of all the energy-generating potential of the Generalitat's buildings"

, added Aragonès, who predicted that this measure will contribute to improving the energy efficiency of public services of the Government.

For his part, Jordà stressed that the Government wants to "put energy at the service of the common good" and pointed out that it will be the first time that Catalonia has a public energy company, which in his opinion will lead to an improvement in the energy market.

The energy company will be set up as

a single-member, public limited company

, with direct participation of the Generalitat and "will act as its own means to improve the Catalan energy market", the Government has stressed.

The improvement will focus especially on the provision of the Generalitat itself and its bodies, since "it will guarantee that energy consumption ceases to be an expense and begins to be an investment with savings in the short and medium term and, once the investment has been amortized be a source of income.

The Generalitat also wants to use it to "promote the democratization of energy with territorial cohesion, with investment capacity in electricity generation", in electric car recharging services and in the supply of energy to the administration itself.

Public energy will promote

self-consumption and distributed generation projects

in all public buildings of the Generalitat, and will have an energy supply policy that allows the purchase of renewable energy with bilateral agreements with local generators.

The Government has stressed that it will be "a key tool for Catalonia's energy transition", with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% in 2030.
