The unemployment rate in Spain continues to double the European average despite the increase in affiliation
August
is a traditionally
negative month for employment
due to the end of the summer campaign and this time it has ended with the
destruction of 189,963 jobs,
the largest loss of employment in an August since
2019
, while a total of
40,428 people
They signed up for the
unemployment lists of
the State Public Employment Service (SEPE), also the largest increase since before the pandemic.
However, as reported this Friday by the Ministries of Labor and Social Security,
August was better than it had been in the years immediately prior to the arrival of covid
.
While last year the destruction of jobs was 118,004 people and in 2020 even jobs were created in that month (6,822), in
2019
a total of 212,984 people lost their jobs in August and in
2018
there were 202,996, years in which that
the dynamism of the Spanish labor market was already running out of steam.
The same thing happened with
unemployment
, since in August 2017 46,400 people registered for unemployment in August;
in 2018, there were 47,047, and
in 2019, 54,371
, in all three cases figures higher than the current one.
In the years of the pandemic, employment behaved differently: with 29,780 more unemployed in August 2020 and a historic reduction in unemployment last year, of 82,583 people.
Thus, the country now has
20.15 million Social Security affiliates
(10.77 million men and 9.37 million women) and a total of
2.92 million unemployed,
the lowest number
of unemployed for a month of August
since 2008.
Despite the loss of jobs in August, this has been a month similar to those of recent years, after a month of July that was surprisingly the most negative in the last two decades.
On the last day of the month, this Wednesday
, August 31,
269,716 jobs were lost, a very strong destruction of jobs but lower than that which occurred on the same day last year, out of a total of 289,982 jobs in a single day .
As reported by the Social Security, jobs were destroyed in August
in all regimes and sectors of activity
-agriculture, construction, industry, construction and services-.
As for
unemployment
, it decreased in agriculture by 6,693 people (-4.53%) and in the Collective without Previous Employment by -494 people (-0.2%), but
increased in the Services Sector
with 37,546 more unemployed (1 .85%), in
Construction
where unemployment increased by 5,095 people (2.23%) and in
Industry
by 4,974 people (2.13%).
At a territorial level, the communities in which it increased the most were
Andalusia
(9,955),
Catalonia
(9,554) and the
Valencian Community .
(6,994).
Unemployment
of young people under 25 years of age
rose in August by 8,881 people (4.71%) compared to the previous month to a total of
197,486,
its second best record in the entire historical series.
Despite the fact that the comparison between the behavior of the labor market in a month compared to the same month of the previous year already serves to seasonally adjust the data and compare homogeneous periods, the ministry headed by
José Luis Escrivá
has also disclosed the evolution of employment according to
its series seasonally adjusted
-the criteria used for seasonal adjustment are not public- and according to which employment grew in August by 62,135 affiliates and the number of registered workers reached 20,173,277.
The Ministry reported that in August the increase in
affiliates with indefinite contracts continued to accelerate,
with
1.6 million more
affiliates with indefinite contracts than in the years before the pandemic and 2.1 million more than in August 2021. " In August, the quality of employment continues to improve: there are
2.1 million more affiliates with an indefinite contract
than a year ago. The growth in affiliation in the three summer months exceeds that registered in the years 2017-2019," he pointed out.
The increase in permanent contracts occurs after the approval, in December 2021, of the
labor reform,
which hindered the creation of temporary contracts, giving priority instead to
permanent
or
discontinuous ones
.
The latter have the advantage that although the worker collects the unemployment benefit during periods of inactivity, he does not count as unemployed and when the employer needs employees again, he has the obligation to call him again.
The new legislation also penalizes the use of short-term contracts, which is why, according to data published today,
contracts between 1 and 7 days have been reduced by 1.7 million,
while longer-term contracts have increased.
