The Ministry of Health and Welfare decided to raise the health insurance premium rate by 1.49% in 2023 at the Health Insurance Policy Review Committee held yesterday (29th).

As a result, the insurance premium rate for employers will increase by 0.1 percentage point from the current 6.99% to 7.09% next year.

As of July of this year, the average monthly insurance premium paid by employers will increase by 2,69 won, and the average premium per household of regional subscribers will rise by 1,598 won.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare explained the reason for the increase in health insurance premiums by saying that although income decreased due to the reform of the health insurance system, expenses increased due to the increase in the number and implementation of essential medical care.

Excluding 2017, the health insurance premium rate has risen every year for the past 10 years.

The current health insurance law sets an upper limit for the premium rate for employers to be set within the range of 8% of their income.

Some point out that it is necessary to stabilize the financial base through efficient spending rather than raising the health insurance premium rate unconditionally because the finances deteriorated in consideration of the burden of health insurance premiums on the low-income and the underprivileged.

The government plans to form a health insurance financial reform promotion group and discuss it intensively by October and come up with a plan.
