Operations at

Tenerife South airport

are paralyzed

until 7:00 p.m.

this Saturday after

a Ryanair plane blocked a runway

by aborting takeoff, air traffic controllers reported this Saturday.

In their social networks, air traffic controllers have indicated that the plane corresponding to

Ryanair flight B738

has blocked a runway at the Tenerife airfield by aborting takeoff, which has caused "many flights" to have had to divert to alternative airports and

are taking place "significant delays"

.

The Ryanair plane has blocked the runway when the crew has decided, for safety reasons, to abort the takeoff because

apparently the brakes have reached a high temperature and have locked

up .

The plane is expected to have to be towed from the runway and the incident has caused significant delays in flights to and from the island, with

several of them diverted to alternative airports

, including a medical one, air traffic controllers continue.

Sources from Spanish Airports and Air Navigation (

AENA

) have indicated to EFE that

three flights have been diverted to Tenerife North and another three to Gran Canaria

and have indicated that work is being done to clear the runway as soon as possible, on which the Ryanair plane was immobilized.

AENA has also confirmed that at the moment

flights are not taking off

from the airport in the south of Tenerife.

Subsequently, the controllers have communicated that Eurocontrol has issued a "Rate Zero" order for flights to Tenerife South, that is, takeoffs to that airport are not authorized initially until 7:00 p.m., although the incident is expected to be resolved before then.
