This is a record both for the percentage of divorces and for their number: 254,777 couples divorced in 2021 compared to 222,036 in 2020. The number of marriages, on the other hand, stagnated at 880,000 while the population increased by nearly two million.

For most experts, the cause of the increase in divorces and the stagnation of marriages is economic.

The rising cost of living makes marriages too expensive to contract but also too expensive to maintain.

More and more divorces take place less than two years after marriage.

But some experts believe that the increase in divorce cases is also due to the increasing liberation of women.

Divorced women are less and less ostracized, which encourages more and more

abused wives

to resort to it.
