The Girocard is being used more and more contactlessly for cashless payment of purchases at the checkout.

In the meantime, it has become a matter of course for many to pay at the counter, said Euro Kartensystem GmbH, a joint venture of the German banking industry, on Wednesday.

Contactless payment is now firmly established in everyday life and has settled at a high level.

In the first half of the year, 74.3 percent of all Girocard payment transactions were contactless - an increase of ten percentage points within a year.

Contactless payment is therefore also at the center of all further developments, the company explained.

One focus is online trading.

During the corona pandemic, paying in this way has become increasingly popular.

Hygiene reasons also played an important role.

The Girocard is the most widespread and used card system in German retail.

Banks and savings banks together have issued around 100 million cards to their customers.

In the first half of the year, the Girocard was used for a total of around 3.17 billion payment transactions - an increase of 17.1 percent compared to the same period last year, as the company further announced.

Sales increased by 17.9 percent to around 134 billion euros.

For the first time, the number of electronic cash registers in retail where the Girocard can be used exceeded one million.

Compared to the first half of 2021, this is an increase of around eleven percent.
