How hot weather affects vegetable prices

  Our reporter Huang Junyi

  □ The current national vegetable field area is 105.721 million mu, a year-on-year increase of 3.996 million mu; the vegetable output in mid-July was 29.384 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 1.504 million tons.

The field area and output of vegetables have increased, and the basis for stable production and supply is good.

  □ Strong convection and heavy rainfall in summer may adversely affect vegetable production in some areas, and the price of individual varieties may fluctuate frequently in some areas.

Recently, high temperature weather has occurred in many parts of the country. Will vegetable prices and supply be affected?

On August 16, the average price of 28 kinds of vegetables monitored by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs was 4.61 yuan/kg, down 0.6% from August 15 and 1.5% from 4.68 yuan/kg on August 1.

There are two main types of vegetables whose prices have dropped recently: one is legume vegetables that are being marketed in a concentrated manner recently; the other is vegetables whose market volume has gradually increased, including cauliflower that has gradually increased in the main producing areas of cold and cool vegetables such as Gansu and Hebei. , broccoli, onion, etc.

According to the CPI data released by the National Bureau of Statistics, the price of fresh vegetables in July rose by 12.9% year-on-year, affecting the CPI rise by about 0.24 percentage points; while the price of fresh vegetables in June rose by 3.7% year-on-year, affecting the CPI rise by about 0.07 percentage points.

Zhang Jing, chief analyst of the vegetable market analysis and early warning team of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, said in an interview with reporters that the current price of most vegetables in the country remains stable, and the price of a small number of vegetables fluctuates slightly.

The price first rose and then fell, which is a major feature of the vegetable market since July.

Affected by the strong convection and continuous high temperature weather in many major producing areas, the national vegetable prices rebounded in July on the basis of June, with the average prices rising by 5.0%, 5.5% and 3.7% respectively for three consecutive weeks, and falling by 1.3% in the last week.

In August (as of August 16), the national average wholesale price of 28 kinds of vegetables monitored by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs fell 0.2% from the previous month and 0.7% from the same period last year.

In terms of varieties, the prices of 17 kinds of vegetables rose month-on-month, while 11 kinds fell.

Liu Tong, manager of the Statistics Department of Beijing Xinfadi Agricultural Products Wholesale Market, told reporters that in August, vegetable prices in the Beijing market showed a continuous downward trend.

On August 5, the weighted average price of vegetables in Beijing Xinfadi was 2.92 yuan/kg, down 9.03% from 3.21 yuan/kg on July 29.

The week-to-week drop was sharp, mainly due to the fact that the late summer vegetables were entering the stage of concentrated listing.

Chinese cabbage, cabbage, celery, white radish, lettuce, zucchini, lump lettuce, and loose-leaf lettuce produced in cold and cool areas have expanded the planting area compared with last year. The vegetables that were previously replanted due to rainfall were concentrated in the harvest period, resulting in higher prices. Quickly lower.

At the same time, beans and vegetables from northern Hebei, northern Shanxi, central and eastern Inner Mongolia, and Liaoning are also in a concentrated market recently, and their prices are squeezing each other.

Among them, the prices of frame beans, bean king, white beans, lentils, cowpeas and oil beans fell to the lowest prices in the same period in recent years.

Relevant experts said that these vegetables, which are in the stage of centralized listing, have recently experienced difficulty in selling to varying degrees in their production areas.

What is the trend of vegetable prices in the second half of the year?

Zhang Jing said that the current national vegetable field area is 105.721 million mu, a year-on-year increase of 3.996 million mu; the vegetable output in mid-July was 29.384 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 1.504 million tons.

This year, both the field area and output of vegetables in the country have increased, and the basis for stabilizing production and supply is good.

In particular, the cultivation of cold and cool vegetables has been expanded, and has begun to enter a concentrated market period. The "Northern Vegetables to the South" and "Western Vegetables to the East" have brought effective supplements to the market, and the overall supply of summer and autumn vegetables is guaranteed.

However, since June, the continuous high temperature and rainy weather across the country has brought pressure on vegetable prices in July and August, and the scale of cross-regional transportation of cold and cool vegetables has increased, and the cost of preservation and transportation in transit has increased, which indicates that the price of vegetables will be higher in the later period. The room for further downside is very limited.

In addition, strong convection and heavy rainfall in summer may adversely affect vegetable production in some areas, and the price fluctuations of individual varieties in some areas may be more frequent.

However, due to the high price of vegetables in the fourth quarter of last year due to the impact of the autumn flood, it is expected that by the fourth quarter of this year, the price of vegetables will mainly decline year-on-year.
