The Emirates Water and Electricity Company and the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development announced the signing of a strategic memorandum of understanding to promote best practices in the field of sustainability and clean energy certificates in the industrial sector in the emirate, as well as to enhance the competitiveness of the energy sector in Abu Dhabi and relations with industrial partners in the private sector.

A statement issued yesterday clarified that under the memorandum, the Emirates Water and Electricity Company will work with the Industrial Development Bureau of the Abu Dhabi Economy to promote sustainable practices in the industrial sector, by developing new solutions to support innovation in energy products, in addition to leading the process. Developing proposals, to ensure continuous improvement of the business environment, with the aim of attracting new investments and enabling sustainable factories to thrive in Abu Dhabi, which contributes to supporting the strategic plans of the Abu Dhabi government, including the goals of the Abu Dhabi Industrial Strategy, by encouraging the adoption of innovative solutions, and promoting sustainability in The industrial sector system, in line with the UAE strategic initiative, to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

Sustainable innovation is an essential element in Abu Dhabi's development strategies, most notably the Abu Dhabi Industrial Strategy, which includes plans for a smart circular economy, enhancing added value, and ensuring cost competitiveness.

The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy issued energy characteristics certificates in August 2021, to drive the transition to a sustainable and carbon-free energy sector, and establish a market to facilitate the trading of renewable and nuclear energy certificates in the emirate.

Undersecretary of the Department of Economic Development in Abu Dhabi, Rashid Al Balushi, said, "The signing of the memorandum of understanding with the Emirates Water and Electricity Company comes as part of our continuous efforts to strengthen partnerships and alliances with the most prominent actors from the public and private sectors, to ensure the achievement of the goals of the smart and circular economy in Abu Dhabi, which promotes the achievement of the goals of Sustainability in the UAE.

For his part, Othman Al Ali, CEO of Emirates Water and Electricity Company, said, "The new strategic partnership with the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development is an important opportunity that contributes to enhancing the competitiveness of Abu Dhabi's economy to achieve the principle of sustainability."

He added, "The clean energy certification system in Abu Dhabi has proven the significant impact that it can have in helping companies achieve their goals regarding decarbonizing their energy consumption, and taking concrete measures to address climate change."
