The month of

July ended with the destruction of 7,366 jobs

in the country and the addition of

3,230 people to the unemployment lists of

the State Public Employment Service (SEPE), despite being a traditionally good month for the labor market due to the summer season, as reported on Tuesday by the Ministries of Labor and Social Security.

The average number of

affiliates to Social Security has fallen in the month by 7,366 people

, while at least since 2001 the number of workers in the country

had always grown in this month

.

In 2021, 91,451 workers joined the system;

In 2020 -the year of the pandemic-, 161,217 employees were gained compared to June, and in previous years there were always increases in the number of employees, even in the worst moments of the financial crisis.

The worst year in the most recent history was 2012

, when the country only

added 4,896 workers

in July.

This loss of jobs experienced in July this year leaves the

total number of workers

registered with Social Security at

20.34 million

, 3.8% more than there was a year ago or 749,236 more employed.

Although the average number of monthly affiliates is the indicator that has historically been used to measure the evolution of employment (in order to interpret the data, they are always compared with the same months of previous years to avoid distortions derived from seasonality), the Ministry that directed by

José Luis Escrivá

gives more importance to the evolution of

affiliates in seasonally adjusted terms.

According to this statistically manipulated measure,

employment would have grown by 9,104 people

in July and the total number of workers would rise to 20.11 affiliates.

Thus, employment would have been growing in Spain for 15 months, despite the fact that July has actually ended with 7,366 fewer workers

until the 29th of the month

.

The 31st was Sunday, so the destruction of employment that occurred in the last weekend will be included in the data for August.

The destruction of jobs has occurred, as in other years, in

Agriculture, Livestock and Fishing

(51,850 fewer affiliates in July, while 51,722 were lost in the same month last year), but the increase in employment that it is usually produced traditionally in the

Services

sector and that compensates for this loss this year has been much lower.

28,062 workers

have been hired

for this activity,

compared to 119,669 who joined last year.

On the other hand, the number of those who are

signed up for the unemployment lists

has increased by

3,230 people

, something again

unusual

since at least in the last ten years - period for which data is provided -

there had never before been an increase in stop this month

.

Last year, unemployment fell by 197,841 people;

in 2020, at 89,949;

and in 2019 -which was the worst recent year- it fell by 4,253 people.

With this, the

number of unemployed in Spain

stands at

2,883,812,

still the lowest figure recorded in a month of July since 2008.

The Ministry led by

Yolanda Díaz

has indicated that "it is not the first time that unemployment has risen slightly in the month of July", but has admitted that "

the increase on this occasion has been significant from the middle of the month

, largely partly due to

international uncertainty

."

By sectors, unemployment rose in July, especially in

Education

, with

23,708 new unemployed

due to the end of the school year, which once again demonstrates the

precariousness faced by teachers

, both in the public and private sectors, whose contract it is rescinded in the summer to be hired again at the beginning of the course.

Unemployment has also increased in agriculture (825 more unemployed) and in construction (976).

In

industry

, however, despite the difficulties it is facing, unemployment has fallen by 1,909 people.

Impact of the labor reform

The Ministry has boasted one more month of the positive impact that the

labor reform

is having on

hiring

, since during the month of July a total of

1.66 million contracts

have been registered , of which

41.44% are from indefinite character

(685,992 contracts, a figure that multiplies by four the historical average).

Of these, 285,252 are full time, 159,150 are part time and

241,590 are permanent discontinuous.

The latter are the ones that have replaced temporary contracts and are now classified as indefinite despite the fact that there are periods in which the worker is inactive.

In cumulative terms, full-time indefinite contracts in the first seven months of the year reached a total of

1,608,898,

which represents an

increase of 909,417 (130.01%)

compared to the same period in 2021.
