The Friedrichshafen-based engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce Power Systems sees increasing demand for its engines for tanks and submarines and is therefore investing a mid-double-digit million amount in its production facility in Friedrichshafen.

At the same time, the group is demanding “quick concrete commitments from politicians as to which vehicles and ships are to be procured and in what quantities,” Rolls-Royce manager Knut Müller is quoted as saying in the statement.

This is the only way to ensure that the systems are delivered on time.

The company, based in Friedrichshafen, is best known for its large MTU engines.

It belongs to the British industrial group Rolls-Royce, which emerged from the car manufacturer of the same name, but today has nothing to do with it.

According to the company, the MTU engines are installed in the Puma infantry fighting vehicle, the Leopard 2 battle tank, the Boxer transport vehicle and in ships and submarines.

As a result of the Russian attack on Ukraine, a number of countries, including Germany, decided to increase their orders.

Almost a tenth of the turnover, equivalent to 3.3 billion euros, is attributable to special military engines for land vehicles.

Sales of engines for military ships are not reported separately.

By 2031, the company, which employs a total of around 9,000 people, intends to hire up to 450 new employees and expand assembly lines, depending on the order situation.

In exchange with politicians, customers and manufacturers, "a concept has been developed as to how we can deliver at short notice and on schedule, despite disrupted supply chains and raw material shortages, as soon as orders come in," Labor Director Thelse Godewerth is quoted as saying in the statement.

The expected orders cannot be handled with the existing employees and systems.
