July sales of five major department stores surpassed last year's same month due to strong sales of summer items such as parasols and expensive items such as jewelry.

Five major department stores announced preliminary sales figures for July on the 1st.

Compared to the same month last year, Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings increased by 14.6%, Sogo & Seibu by 13.9%, Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores by 12.5%, Takashimaya by 10.6%, and Hankyu Hanshin Department Stores by 10.2%.

This is because sales of high-priced items such as jewelry continue to be strong, and some overseas brands saw a rush in demand before price increases. This is due to the increase in sales of carrying cases used for excursions and homecomings.

However, each company said that in the second half of the month, the number of customers had slowed down due to the increase in the number of people infected with the new coronavirus, and compared to the same month in 2019, before the spread of infection, due to the delayed recovery of inbound demand, etc. It means that sales are still below about 10%.
