Dubai records a 6.3% increase in energy demand during the first half

The Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, announced that the demand for energy in the Emirate of Dubai during the first half of 2022 increased by 6.3%, compared to the same period in 2021.

He stated that the demand for energy during the first half of this year amounted to 23,096 GWh, compared to 21,729 GWh during the first half of 2021.

Al Tayer said: “In line with the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, aimed at achieving comprehensive and sustainable development in the Emirate of Dubai, we continue to work to increase production capacity to meet the increasing demand for electricity and water services. In Dubai, according to the highest standards of availability, reliability, efficiency and quality, thanks to the world-class governance system that the authority applies in all its operations.”

He added: "We are keen to raise the capacity and efficiency of the transmission and distribution networks, to keep pace with the increasing demand for electricity and water services, and to meet the future needs of customers, developers and business sectors, while providing an appropriate reserve margin."

He stressed that the authority's plans for growth are in line with the "Dubai Urban Plan 2040", the "Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050", and the "Dubai Carbon Neutrality Strategy 2050", which aims to provide 100% of the energy production capacity in Dubai from clean energy sources by year 2050.

Al Tayer pointed out that the rise in energy demand in Dubai confirms the economic recovery and the return of various vital activities, as the Emirate of Dubai has proactively succeeded in benefiting from the technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and applying strong precautionary measures to ensure business continuity.

He explained that this vision contributed to Dubai providing a model for the world in its readiness to deal with various challenges and turn them into promising opportunities.

DEWA's production capacity

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority has a production capacity of 14,117 megawatts of electricity and 490 million gallons of desalinated water per day.

The authority provides its services to the population of Dubai, who number about three million and 514 thousand people, and more than 4.7 million people during the day.

These numbers are expected to rise to 5.8 million and 7.8 million, respectively, by 2040.
