Mercian, a major wine company, has announced that the price of the new French wine "Beaujolais nouveau" to be sold this fall is expected to increase significantly from last year.

The main factor is the rise in transportation costs due to the impact of the invasion of Ukraine, and the movement to raise prices is spreading to imported wine.

"Beaujolais nouveau" is a new wine made from grapes harvested that year in the Beaujolais district of Burgundy, France, and its sale is lifted on the third Thursday of November every year.

Mercian, the importer and wine giant, said that the over-the-counter price of Beaujolais nouveau, which will be sold this time, is expected to double last year.

In the case of 750 ml of red wine, the price is expected to increase from 2120 yen last year to 4310 yen including tax.

Regarding the reason, the company's invasion of Ukraine by Russia has restricted air transportation routes through Russia's airspace, resulting in detours, as well as the effects of high crude oil prices and the depreciation of the yen, resulting in a significant increase in transportation costs. It is said that being there is the main factor.

In addition, due to the shrinking of air freight transportation, the number of products to be sold will be reduced from 10 last year to 2 products.

Regarding Beaujolais nouveau this year, Suntory has also announced that it is expected to raise the price, and the movement to raise the price is spreading to imported wine.
