• Internet users have posted a map of the future French rail network, cut off from its “small lines”.

A project that would emanate from the SNCF itself.

  • This map was produced by an Internet user, who anticipates the future disappearance of these lines due to their degradation.

  • These degradations would be the consequences of the performance contract signed in April between the State and the SNCF and decried by the Senate and the Transport Regulatory Authority.

No more Guingamp-Carhaix?

Farewell to the Caen-Cherbourg link?

According to several Internet users, the SNCF would have planned the destruction of all the small train lines in a new project for the French rail network.

Some even put forward a map of the "future railway project", showing a "before/after" with a plan of the current network and its future, ten years later, emaciated, lightened of all the small lines.

"There will soon be only the Paris-Lyon and Paris-Marseille lines left", comments a user on the Telegram network.

Many are moved by the message and the environmental consequences supposedly sent by the government.

Others rage against the alleged greed of the French company which favors the main lines, "cash cows", to the detriment of the inhabitants of rural areas.

But if it is worrying for users, can we trust this projection?

FAKE OFF

This map does not come from SNCF Réseau, the group's subsidiary in charge of the tracks and signal boxes.

A quick Twitter search brings up a discussion thread – a “thread” – posted on July 3.

The author of this thread is BB27000, train driver and tweeter well known to rail transport enthusiasts for his educational content.

, Wilfried Demaret, his name in the city, confirms being the author of the discussion thread and the map.

But at no time does it claim that it represents an official SNCF project, and does not have a disinformation objective.

The projection of the consequences of the new State-SNCF Network contract

In his thread, Wilfried Demaret warns of the consequences of the performance contract signed between the State and SNCF Réseau on April 6.

This document, signed discreetly four days before the first round of the presidential election, should set the trajectory of SNCF Réseau until 2030. Much criticized, it plans in particular to invest 2.8 billion euros per year for the regeneration of the network. , but nothing for its modernization.

I will come back in more detail to this map of the “future rail network” as it risks becoming.

So that you fully understand the issues.

According to Wilfried Demaret, in view of needs and inflation, this investment would be largely insufficient.

The lack of maintenance will lead to a progressive deterioration of the lines until the traffic ban, and therefore the closure of these lines.

The train driver adds that the lines, which are less crowded, will be the first victims of the lack of means.

It was on the basis of the classification of the least frequented lines and a map of the SNCF network from 2001, "very close to the current network", that Wilfried Demaret erased all the lines which will disappear in ten years according to his forecasts, to obtain the famous map circulating on the Internet.

Senate, Regulator and SNCF alert on the degradation of the network

If this map is not an official projection, there is nothing to confirm today that "small" lines will not be threatened in France by 2030. In addition to Wilfried Demaret, many voices have been raised against this performance contract.

Among them, the Senate railed twice against the insufficiency of ambitions and means: “This contract acts on the aging of the network for the regional structuring lines.

»

The Transport Regulatory Authority (ART), through its president, Bernard Romana, denounced “a missed opportunity” and warned of the risks of degradation of the network.

The Chairman and CEO of SNCF Réseau, Luc Lallemand, himself regretted the lack of ambition of the contract before the Senate's Regional Planning and Sustainable Development Committee on February 16, 2022.
