In 2023, the ring road will celebrate its 50th anniversary.

This 35 km ring that encircles the capital remains an essential axis of travel for Ile-de-France residents, with more than a million trips per day.

It is also a vector of air pollution, with thresholds up to six times higher than those recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), but also of noise, as the Socialist Mayor of the capital recalls. , which wants to make it an “urban boulevard” by 2030.

This transformation involves standardizing the axis with two times three lanes, one less than at present, or even two if we consider that there will be one reserved for buses, taxis and carpooling.

Another development, the planting of 50,000 trees and the redevelopment of the gates to erase the impression of a border between Paris and its suburbs.

As you can imagine, the reduction in the number of lanes has drawn strong criticism.

And these come from all over.

Some would prefer the implementation of a global mobility plan for Paris and Ile-de-France, others propose the closure of certain access roads to reduce the congestion effect, still others call for alternative transport solutions, such as a circular metro line or the relaunch of the small rail belt for freight.

But that's not all.

Because in recent years, many green spaces adjoining the ring road have disappeared in favor of buildings, most often offices.

This is evidenced by the felling of more than 70 trees at Porte de Montreuil, where several office buildings are to come out of the ground.

This undermines the illusory desire to make the ring road a green belt.

To catch up, the first Deputy Mayor promises 50% greening in future development operations and more than 50% social housing in the rehabilitation of popular neighborhoods along the axis.

Empty promises?

The future will tell…
