TSMC, the world's largest contract manufacturer of semiconductors, has established a research base for advanced semiconductors in Ibaraki Prefecture.

In the future, we will accelerate our research by making use of our knowledge of manufacturing equipment and materials, which Japan has strengths in.

TSMC has set up a new research base in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture.

Of the approximately 37 billion yen project cost, approximately 19 billion yen, which is half of the project cost, is supported by the Japanese government, and on the 24th, TSMC and Japanese government officials gathered to hold the opening ceremony.

"Japan and Taiwan have important connections in the global semiconductor supply chain, and we are confident that cooperation at this facility will lead to more innovation," said Wei Tetsuya, CEO of TSMC.

Competition is fierce as countries embark on industrial support from the perspective of economic security over advanced semiconductors that are indispensable for communication networks and autonomous driving.

At the new research center, Japan will have strengths by conducting research toward the practical application of advanced technologies that combine multiple functions such as "logic semiconductors" that perform advanced arithmetic processing and semiconductors for storage. We will accelerate our research by making use of our knowledge of manufacturing equipment and materials.

Hiroshi Emoto, director of the TSMC Japan 3DIC R & D Center, said, "I want to speed up development by doing research in Japan."
