While your health problems are gradually preventing you from performing certain daily tasks and a move to a collective establishment seems to be necessary, are you reluctant to lose your independence by entering a retirement home?

Fortunately, there are many other solutions, including inclusive housing.

This consists of a mode of collective housing combined with a social life project, made up of adapted individual housing which guarantees you privacy and freedom, and shared common spaces for more conviviality.

Who is inclusive housing for?

This innovative formula is intended for the elderly but also for those with disabilities who choose to live together.

It is therefore open to all seniors interested in this way of life halfway between the individual and the collective, without special conditions of resources (no need to be eligible for the personalized autonomy allowance) or dependency. (no evaluation of the loss of autonomy with the GIR grid).

Entry into this type of housing is therefore not conditional on a medico-social orientation but is based solely on the desire of individuals to reside in a community.

How does it work ?

Inclusive housing generally takes the form of shared accommodation or grouped apartments within an ordinary building located, in order to facilitate social inclusion and avoid isolation, close to amenities, shops, services and other transport.

This place of life can also belong to the private or social park.

On average, 5 to 10 people live together in these accommodations as tenants, roommates or owners, without this figure being restrictive.

The occupants share common premises (for example garden, roof terrace, dining room or sports hall) assigned to the social life project defined between them;

they also benefit from private spaces (bedroom, independent studio, small one- or two-bedroom apartment, etc.), furnished or not, which serve as their main residence.

If they wish, residents can also pool the human help they need, for example by pooling all or part of their personalized autonomy allowance (APA) and by jointly requesting social support or an offer health and medico-social services (carer, home nursing, etc.).

What does the social life project consist of?

Defined, developed and implemented by the inhabitants themselves, the social life project can take many forms.

Above all, it is a question of promoting living together and collective activities within the habitat, but also of better integrating into the life of the neighborhood by developing social ties.

In practice, this can thus consist of the creation of a community vegetable garden, dancing events, cultural outings or even cooking classes.

A salaried animator can also be present to help set up these collective activities which evolve over time according to the wishes of the residents.

How to find an inclusive habitat?

Relatively recent, this mode of housing is still not very widespread... However, the enthusiasm for this more convivial collective life is such that the offer should expand considerably in the coming years!

Help to develop projects

In order to help set up the social and shared life project, the organization that organizes inclusive housing could so far receive a package from the Regional Health Agency.

Nevertheless, this device will be gradually replaced by a new specific service, the AVP (shared living aid), currently being tested in 30 to 40 departments with the support of the National Solidarity Fund for Autonomy.

Its aim is to promote the development of inclusive housing by financing the animation and coordination of the social life project.

This aid may be granted to any resident of an inclusive habitat whose bearer has signed an agreement with the department.
