DEWA: 8 billion gallons of water savings from the “high consumption notice” service until March 2022

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) launched its smart grid report for 2022, to shed light on the latest developments in the authority’s smart network and its role in maintaining the authority’s position as one of the best and most distinguished service institutions around the world. Smart grid investments amount to seven billion dirhams until 2035, and water savings of more than eight billion gallons, achieved by the “high water consumption notification” service until March 2022.

The Authority's report showed the role of the smart grid in developing smart cities, in support of the "Smart Dubai" initiative launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make Dubai the smartest and happiest city in the world.

The report reviews the excellence of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority's smart grid, and its compliance with the highest standards of institutional flexibility and agility in the world, which allows the authority to keep pace with developments and rapid changes.

The report also focuses on the six axes of the Smart Grid Strategy 2021-2035: foundational enablers, smart grid automation, smart energy solutions and green mobility, smart water network, artificial intelligence, and value-added innovative services.

These themes include 19 of the world's leading smart grid enablers, their contribution to achieving the authority's strategic goals, and enabling the authority's smart grid strategy until 2035.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, said that the smart grid contributes to ensuring that the authority continues to provide integrated and connected services around the clock, in accordance with the highest standards of availability, reliability, reliability and sustainability.

He added: “The smart grid enhances the strength of the Authority’s advanced and flexible infrastructure, allowing facilities and services to be managed through intelligent and interconnected systems that rely on the latest disruptive technologies and the technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, including artificial intelligence, blockchain technology, energy storage, the Internet of things and others.” .

Al Tayer pointed out that the smart grid uses innovative and proactive solutions to improve efficiencies and enhance efforts to continue developing the authority, with the aim of raising efficiency and rationalizing consumption, as the authority succeeded in reducing the percentage of waste in water transmission and distribution networks to 5.3% in 2021, which is one of the lowest rates in the world .

He stressed that the smart grid supports the "Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050" and the "Carbon Neutrality Strategy 2050" of the Emirate of Dubai to provide 100% of the energy production capacity from clean energy sources by 2050.

In turn, the Executive Vice President of the Business Development and Excellence Sector at the Authority, Engineer Walid bin Salman, indicated that the total investments of the smart grid of DEWA amount to seven billion dirhams until 2035, which provides advanced features including the possibility of interoperability between Various parts of the electricity and water network.

Bin Salman pointed out that the Smart Grid 2022 report focuses on the role of the six pillars of the "Smart Grid Strategy 2021-2035" in supporting the continuity of DEWA's excellence and global leadership.

It is noteworthy that the “Notification of High Water Consumption” service provided by the authority, and which is part of the Smart Response initiative, helps customers discover any leaks in the water connections after the meter.

Until March 2022, the service achieved water savings of more than eight billion gallons, and savings on customers amounting to about 500 million dirhams.
