Consumers told «Emirates Today» that the types of shopping bags with multiple uses in some outlets in Abu Dhabi are very limited, and most of them are very expensive, demanding multiple alternatives that take into account the prices and materials of plastic bags that were banned from use as of June 1.

Two officials in two outlets said that the application is still in its infancy, pointing out that some consumers are not accustomed to keeping the bags for use again in shopping.

They assured «Emirates Today» that the coming period will witness an evaluation of the experience, and the introduction of new types, to identify their pros and cons, and how to improve the consumer experience.

lack of options

In detail, the consumer, Amna Ali, stated that outlets offer limited types that do not exceed two types of new multi-use shopping bags, pointing out that the outlets offer high-priced alternatives, with the absence of multiple options for consumers.

She explained that most of the available bags are either small and sold at 2.5 dirhams, or large at 11.50 dirhams.

And she called for offering multiple alternatives that take into account prices and materials, so that the consumer can choose according to his budget and the quantity and quality of his purchases.

For his part, consumer Adel Abdul Karim said that multi-use bags sold for half a dirham are few and not available in many outlets, which prompts consumers to buy high-priced bags, pointing out that the shopper needs at least six to eight small bags.

It was agreed that the options for bags in general are few, and the price is high, as the price of most of them ranges between 2.50 and 13 dirhams per bag, at a time when the consumer needs between four and six at a time per week, which constitutes a burden on consumers.

He pointed out that some outlets focus on offering high-priced types only.

In the same context, consumer Akram Al-Faqih said that the options and alternatives are very limited, noting that a large number of outlets offer at most two types of multi-use bags.

He explained that the prices of bags ranged between 2.5 and 13 dirhams, while bags of half a dirham were not available in many outlets, in addition to being small in size, and not suitable for reuse.

As for the consumer, Dima Nazih, she said that the consumer, if he buys many goods, needs five or seven bags on average, which constitutes a burden on him, demanding to provide many options and lower prices that suit different consumers.

new species

For his part, an official in the outlet, Muhammad Al-Assaad, said that the application is still in its infancy, stressing that the coming period will witness the introduction of new types, according to the needs of consumers after studying the results of the application in the last stage.

He added that the crowded periods of shoppers, especially on weekends, witness a high turnout of consumers, which makes some types of bags run out.

Consumer habits

In turn, an official in another outlet, Hassan Rizk, considered that some consumers are not accustomed to keeping the bags for use again in shopping, forcing them to buy new bags every time they shop.

He stressed that getting them used to the new experience, and using the previous bags again, will gradually reduce the burden on them, pointing out that the experience will be evaluated, to identify its pros and cons, and how to improve the consumer experience during the coming period.

The application is still in its infancy, and some consumers are not used to keeping the bags for further use.
