"Israel has signed an agreement on gas exports to the European Union," the statement said.

The gas will be transported to Europe via Egypt.

The corresponding three-year agreement was signed by Israeli Energy Minister Karin Elharar and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Earlier, the chief foreign policy adviser to the Turkish president, Ibrahim Kalin, said that gas from the Eastern Mediterranean could become an alternative to Russian gas for the EU.
