The Emirates Water and Electricity Company announced that the production of desalinated water using low-carbon reverse osmosis technology in the "Al Taweelah Plant" has reached 50% of the plant's production capacity.

And it stated in a statement that the Al Taweelah reverse osmosis plant, which was connected to the Abu Dhabi network in December 2021, produces about 100 million gallons of desalinated water per day, and its production will reach 200 million gallons per day when commercial operation begins, making it the largest reverse osmosis plant in the world.

The CEO of Emirates Water and Electricity Company, Othman Al Ali, said that the production of low-carbon water is a key strategic pillar for the long-term decarbonization of production operations in the energy sector.

He added: “The company began planning to develop the largest reverse osmosis desalination plant in the world in 2018, and was able to reach the production capacity of 50% of the production capacity of the Taweelah plant, which raises a feeling of pride in achieving this result, not only at the level of the company, but also at the level of Abu Dhabi. and the state.”

He continued, "The production of low-carbon desalinated water will ensure that water demand continues to be met in Abu Dhabi and beyond, while at the same time significantly reducing carbon dioxide emissions."

He said: "Since we aim to separate the desalination process and water production from the production of electric power, the Emirates Water and Electricity Company continues to increase investment in the development of reverse osmosis projects, and by 2030 it is expected that more than 90% of our water production will be through reverse osmosis technology, This will reduce the total carbon emissions from water production from 14.6 million tons in 2020 to 2.1 million tons by 2030.”

He stressed that the company is looking forward to achieving the full production capacity of the reverse osmosis plant in "Al Taweelah" soon, and to other reverse osmosis projects, to start producing water in the coming years.

Al Taweelah reverse osmosis plant is the fourth desalination plant to use reverse osmosis technology.

All four plants produce 227 million gallons of water per day through reverse osmosis, which will rise to 327 million gallons once the Al Taweelah reverse osmosis plant reaches full operational capacity.

At this stage, the water produced using the low-carbon reverse osmosis technology will constitute approximately one third of the total water production in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

• The station's production at the start of the commercial operation phase reaches 200 million gallons per day.
