It was with horror that purist enthusiasts saw the very first Porsche Cayenne arrive in 2002.

For the first time, a sports car manufacturer offered in its catalog not a 4-seater coupe, not a family sedan, but downright an imposing 4x4 vehicle.

Many – including yours truly – cried sacrilege and did not believe in the future of such audacity.

20 years later, we have to admit that we were all wrong.

The Savior

Because the sauce very quickly caught on with a public less straddling "traditions".

The Cayenne was an immediate success, and even made a dent in the world of high-end automobiles.

After Bentley, Aston-Martin, Maserati and others, even Ferrari and Lotus have decided to give in to the commercial sirens of the SUV.

For that, we hardly want to say thank you to the Cayenne.

But we still owe him a heartfelt gratitude.

Because in the early 2000s, Porche was financially on a tightrope.

With the Cayenne, it was a bit "make or break".

In a way, therefore, we can say that without the success of the Cayenne, there might not be any more 911s. So yes, thank you.

The funniest thing is that Ferry Porsche himself would have said one day that if his brand developed a 4x4 as qualitative as its sports cars, it would surely work.

Well done, Ferdinand!
