According to American information, former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and his staff took government cash with them when fleeing the Taliban - but not to the extent previously rumored.

A preliminary report by the US Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (Sigar) on Tuesday said evidence indicated the amount was between $500,000 and $1 million.

There is no evidence for claims by the Russian Embassy in Kabul, among others, that 169 million dollars were flown out on board the helicopter carrying the President and his staff.

Ghani has always denied these allegations.

"It is likely that significant amounts of US currency disappeared from the Afghan government's holdings in the chaos of the Taliban takeover," Sigar said.

Since Afghan government records and surveillance videos from the last few days are now in the hands of the Taliban, Sigar cannot determine what ultimately happened to the stolen funds.

After a rapid advance, the Taliban took power in Kabul in August last year.

Ghani fled abroad on August 15, 2020.

He later told the British BBC that he wanted to prevent bloodshed and the destruction of Kabul.
