<Anchor> The

site of Yongsan Park, where the US military base was located, will be opened as a trial in three days.

Earlier, it was known that a part of the site was contaminated, and there was controversy. When we, SBS, obtained the results of the investigation on the rest of the site, both the soil and groundwater were seriously contaminated.

Reporter Jang Se-man, an environmental expert, reports exclusively.

This is the Yongsan US military site that will be opened to the general public three days later.

Centering on a 1.1km-long road that runs from east to west, it is divided into six districts on both sides of the north and south sides.

Of these, four areas were newly returned last month, and a basic environmental survey was conducted.

This is a pollution level investigation report obtained by SBS.

Petroleum-based total hydrocarbons, TPH, which are suspected of oil spillage, were detected up to 28 times higher than the standard value.

Pollutants such as xylene, copper, lead, and zinc, as well as arsenic, a class 1 carcinogen, were also found above the standard at all four sites.

So was the groundwater.

The TPH concentration in the groundwater was up to 190 times higher than the standard, and a large amount of pollutants such as chromium and phenol were also detected.

Through this investigation, all contamination conditions in the six areas facing the pilot open site were confirmed.

In all six sites, the soil and water quality exceeded the pollution standards.

If this area is used as a residential or commercial and industrial area, it has been shown that the risk of causing cancer to residents and workers exceeds the acceptable level.

However, there are conflicting arguments as to whether this trial opening is harmful or not.

Opposition parties and environmental groups are of the view that harmful substances can be exposed to danger if they come in contact with the skin or enter the respiratory tract, but the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has finished reducing measures such as laying artificial turf in the contaminated area, and the visit time is short as 2 hours, so there is no problem. .

It is also a matter of who will bear the cost of cleaning up the site in the future.

The principle is to return the site in advance and negotiate later, so it may be unfavorable to us.

[Jeong Gyu-seok / Secretary General of Green Alliance: Can you tell the citizens to use it as a park, and tell the US military that you have to bear the cost because there are dangerous pollutants here?]

More than 70% of the US bases to be returned have been returned, but Negotiations for double cleanup cost-sharing have not yet been concluded.
