The prices of agricultural products continued to increase in April in France.

The war in Ukraine, the sanctions against Russia or the drought are fueling this inflation.

And if some products are - finally - experiencing a decline in their prices, others, such as eggs, continue their vertiginous rise.

The prices of agricultural products continued to rise drastically in April due to the war in Ukraine, international sanctions against Russia and episodes of drought, INSEE announced on Tuesday.

From April 2021 to April 2022, agricultural producer prices increased by 30.8%, after rising by 27.1% between March 2021 and March 2022 - the IPPAP index having been slightly revised.

"Unprecedented increase"

The latter measures the evolution of the prices of agricultural products when they are first placed on the market.

"This increase, due in particular to the soaring prices of cereals and oilseeds, is unprecedented: before March 2022, the largest increase measured over one year was 26.1% in March 2008", indicates the institute of the statistics.

The surge primarily concerns oilseeds (sunflower, rapeseed, soybeans), the price of which has almost doubled compared to the same month last year, followed by cereals (wheat, corn, barley) which soared by 75.5 %.

Moreover, the price of agricultural products continued to rise from one month to the next, but the rate of increases seems to be running out of steam after record highs.

In April 2022, cereal prices recorded a slight growth of 2.9%, after climbing 36.9% in March, an increase which was "exceptional", according to the institute.

"This new increase is in line with the evolution of soft wheat prices (+4.2%)", which continue to rise due to the conflict in Ukraine, the sanctions imposed on Russia and the drought which affects some crops in the United States.

Egg prices skyrocket

On the other hand, after record increases, "the price of corn fell back in April (-2.3% after +38.2% in March), with in particular international competition which is intensifying", indicates INSEE. .

Oilseed prices also continue to rise by 8.4%, "after the spectacular increase in March" estimated at 27.4%.

Among them, those of sunflower, whose oil is traded at gold prices, fell back slightly by 0.9% after a surge of 43% in March.

Despite a slowdown in the avian flu epizootic in France and Europe in recent weeks, the price of eggs also continued to rise sharply over one month (+26.%) and almost doubled over one year "due to limited supply and strong demand.

The egg interprofession announced in mid-May that France, European champion, would lose around 9% of its production this year because of this episode.
