The production of marine products for the last year decreased by 1.4% from the previous year due to the continued poor fishing of saury and Japanese flying squid, and reached a record low.

According to the Fisheries Statistics compiled by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the production of marine products including aquaculture in the last year was 4,173,000 tons, a decrease of 61,000 tons, or 1.4%, compared to the previous year. It was the lowest since 1956, which can be compared.

Of these, the catch of "sea surface fishing", which fishes in the sea, was 3,191,400 tons, a decrease of 21,900 tons, or 0.7%, compared to the previous year.

By type of fish, saury was about 20,000 tons, 3.4% in 1958 at the peak, and Japanese flying squid was about 30,000 tons at the peak, 4.7% in 1968. increase.

On the other hand, in the aquaculture industry, the cultivation of fish such as red sea bream increased by 1% from the previous year to 250,000 tons and 4,500 tons, and the cultivation of shellfish such as scallops also increased by 4.8% to 323,300 tons.

According to the Fisheries Agency, changes in the marine environment, such as changes in tidal currents and water temperatures, are thought to be the cause of poor fishing of saury and Japanese flying squids.
