• Abbott apologizes for shortage of powdered baby milk in the US

  • US consumption will charter an airlift to import baby milk

The mayor of New York, Eric Adams, declared a state of emergency on Sunday to stop the rise in the price of powdered milk for babies, a product in unprecedented shortage throughout the United States.

"This emergency executive order will help us crack down

on any retailer looking to capitalize on this crisis

by raising prices on this essential commodity. Our message to struggling mothers and families is simple: our city will do everything in its scope to help during this challenging period," the Democrat said in a statement today.

The rule defines an

"excessive price markup" as 10% or more

above the regular price of a product.

In recent weeks, finding powdered baby milk has been a challenge for parents in different states of the country.

Concern about the shortage of formula milk causes shortages in supermarkets

The shortage has been caused by global supply problems caused by the pandemic and difficulties at the production plant that Abbott, the main manufacturer of infant milk in the US, has in Sturgis, Michigan.

"New Yorkers who have been charged more for powdered milk

can file a complaint with the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection

(DCWP) through its website or call 311 and say: 'overcharge'".

"The nationwide infant formula shortage is hurting parents and families in our city at a time when we are still reeling from the crisis of the last two years," said Anne Williams-Isom, Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services in the same release.

Former Mayor Bill de Blasio enacted this same measure at the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic when stores began to raise the prices of sanitizers and masks.

According to the New York City Council, nationally,

more than 40% of large retailers do not carry infant formula.

Last Wednesday, the president of the United States, Joe Biden, authorized the Department of Defense to use the contracts it has with commercial airlines to import powdered milk from anywhere in the world in what the White House baptized as

Operation Fly Formula

( Operation to carry baby milk by plane).

In addition, Biden invoked a law dating from the Cold War to speed up the production of that dairy food in the United States.
