In the Arènes district in Bayonne (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), the collective “14 allées Paulmy” is fighting against the project to build high-end apartments.

The accommodations would replace the oncology and radiology center soon to be transferred.

Activists demonstrated this Wednesday in front of the construction site

reports Sud Ouest.

They ask the public authorities to transform the 2,700 m2 of vacant premises into social housing.

The possibility of social housing

Opponents have been waging this fight since last fall.

They fear that the sale of these one-bedroom apartments at 450,000 euros will lead to a speculative bubble in Bayonne, which they believe will mean additional real estate costs to come.

Created on the initiative of members of the opposition, the political and citizen group believes that the community could block this project and consider other solutions.

The collective therefore evoked the creation of about forty social housing units.

The group asked for a meeting with the mayor of Bayonne and the intermunicipal president in order to present their arguments to them.
