Hundreds of people attended the funeral of 23-year-old Walid Al-Sharif, who died on Saturday of injuries inflicted three weeks earlier in clashes with Israeli police at the Esplanade of the Mosques, Islam's third holiest site and holiest site in Judaism called Temple Mount.

His body was first transported Monday evening through the esplanade where Palestinian flags were waved, then to a cemetery near the Old City, located in East Jerusalem, a Palestinian area occupied and annexed by Israel.

Six police officers injured

In clashes that broke out with Israeli police during the procession, 71 people were injured, including by rubber bullets and stun grenades, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent.

Thirteen people were hospitalized.

Israeli police, meanwhile, reported 15 arrests in '

who threw rocks, bottles, bricks and other

Six police officers were injured in the clashes, police said in their statement.

More than 50 Palestinians from Jerusalem have been arrested, said the Palestinian Prisoners Club, an organization for the defense of detainees imprisoned by Israel.

knife attack

These new clashes occur against a background of persistent violence in the Palestinian Territories and in Israel.

On Tuesday morning, the Israeli army reported an attempted stabbing attack on soldiers at the entrance to the Palestinian city of Nablus in the northern occupied West Bank.

The soldiers opened fire, the army said.

The assailant was wounded in the leg, according to Israeli medical sources.

The violence also comes after Israeli police charged at the

, a Palestinian-American journalist

killed last week

during an Israeli operation in the West Bank, which caused an international outcry.
