Newsletter: Changes in the Eighth Desert in China: From "One Wind a Year" to Nuggets in the Sand

China News Service, Bayannaoer, May 15th, title: China's eighth largest desert changes: from "one wind a year" to the sand to find gold

China News Service reporter Li Aiping

The 54-year-old Yuan Haiwen did not expect that Ulan Buh and the desert, which was full of yellow sand in the past, would be connected to the grid for power generation by the end of October this year.

In the past 10 years, this resident of Dengkou County, Bayannaoer City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, has witnessed the amazing changes that have taken place here.

The Ulan Buhe Desert, located in the western part of Inner Mongolia, is the eighth largest desert in China. Dengkou County has an area of 4.269 million mu. Its economic and social development was once backward, and its industrial layout was plagued by geological and landform problems.

"One wind a year, blowing from winter to spring"

"Ten years ago, except for the raging desert, there was no cement road here." Yuan Haiwen recently introduced to reporters standing under a large photovoltaic panel.

Yuan Haiwen is the director of the management committee of Dengkou Industrial Park. He has a deeper memory of a mantra widely circulated by the local people, "A wind blows from winter to spring".

Yuan Haiwen said humorously, "There is no road underfoot, and there is no grass on the ground" is a true portrayal of Dengkou County at that time. Due to the ravages of Ulanbu and the desert, the people embarked on a journey of sand control through various means in order to change their situation.

The good news is that in the past 10 years, under the control of national key projects such as the Three-North Shelter Forest Project, the Natural Forest Protection Project, the Beijing-Tianjin Sandstorm Source Control Project, and the Converting Farmland to Forest Project, great achievements have been made in local desert control. Achievement.

"The original local forest coverage rate was less than 5%, and now the forest coverage rate has reached more than 37%." Yuan Haiwen told reporters that in order to make a big change in his hometown as soon as possible, the local officials started large-scale afforestation. Cistanche and other industries were discovered, and photovoltaic power generation and other industries were also introduced.

A dairy enterprise called Bayannaoer Shengmu High-Tech Co., Ltd. still "plants" milk here.

Yang Ruiguang, the relevant person in charge of the company, said in an interview with reporters that the company has planted 220,000 mu of organic pastures in the Ulan Buhe desert, and built 23 organic pastures certified by the European Union, with more than 90,000 cows. It can be called the "purest cow" in China.

The reporter combed and found that the news of the production of organic milk in Ulanbu and the desert has been reported by many domestic and foreign media, and the popularity and reputation of Dengkou County have been greatly enhanced.

  Contribute to the "two-carbon" goal

Ulan Buh and the desert are ushering in even greater changes.

On April 16 this year, the Spring Commencement Conference of the Innovation Demonstration Base for the Collaborative Development of Photovoltaic + Sand Industry in the Yellow River Basin of Dengkou County was held in Dengkou Industrial Park.

According to the official introduction, the biggest significance of the start of the project is that after the project is completed and put into operation, it can realize a fixed asset investment of 2.06 billion yuan. The project uses 740,000 double-sided double-glass modules. 726 million kWh, synchronously supporting 60,000 kW of energy storage, 2 hours of energy storage per day.

The latest news shows that the local installed capacity of 360 megawatts has been built, with an annual power generation of nearly 400 million kWh, and it has been included in the new energy photovoltaic base supported by Inner Mongolia during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period.

The government strives to transform Ulan Bu and 300,000 mu of desert into a national model area for desertification prevention and control within 3 to 5 years, and contribute to the "dual carbon" goal.
